"You Got Game"
Yagyuu:
The first time Yagyuu saw him, Niou was identified as the one responsible for breaking his absolute concentration with his sudden, loud laughter. The ball flew in the opposite direction and landed 45 meters from its original destination.
The second Yagyuu saw him, Niou was remembered as the boy from the previous time who caused him to lose his game.
The third time Yagyuu saw him, Niou became the silver-haired fellow who occasionally lurked around the golf range; the one who stared more often at him than away.
The fourth time Yagyuu saw him, Niou approached him, introduced himself in a manner no less flamboyant than expected and immediately attempted to recruit him for the tennis team.
"You have some skill." Niou remarked. "Ever thought of putting into a more-" he cast a pointed look about his surroundings, "-exciting sport?"
He had been unwillingly intrigued, and as time went on, his fascination only increased. He was well aware that other people were well-aware that the wall he'd set up was purposely done in a way so others could be well-aware of it, yet Niou barreled right past that barrier.
No one had ever touched him, much less throw their arm around him in such a familiar manner and not pull back. No one had ever addressed him as simply "Yagyuu" one day before switching to more casual "Hiro-kun" the very next. And no one had ever weaseled out an invitation to his house so quickly.
So he really wasn't surprised when Yukimura-buchou put the two of them together on the Doubles one.
It was only natural.
Niou:
"You're putting me on reserve for Ishimaru?!" Niou asked incredulously, "But Ishimaru sucks!"
Yukimura coughed delicately- a misgiving pretense as he fixed his glare of steel upon the unsuspecting Niou. "Ishimaru is more compatible with Yanagi in doubles, Kirihara hasn't played this season, and I need Sanada on Singles Two." No need to question who Singles One was.
"But buchou-"
"If you can find someone you can play Doubles with, then by all means do so." Yukimura finally said, firmly. "But until then, Ishinaru is a good player in his own respect."
"I don't know how that guy ever made regulars."
"Niou." Buchou gave him a look that clearly meant without saying: 'Don't make me sic Sanada on you.' Buchou's man slavery- no, sorry, 'bodyguard'. Right, whatever.
So, naturally, for the next few hours, Niou resorted to the most logical action for a guy who just found out he wouldn't be playing in the next tournament- he moped.
'If someone's up there right now,' he thought gloomily, "I could really use some-'
"FORE!"
Niou snapped up, surprised to find that he'd wandered near the local golf course. The speaker was a purple-haired boy with glasses in a Rikkai Dai uniform, readying himself for another shot. It was at that moment that Niou was struck with a notion so ridiculous he threw his head back and had himself a good hard laugh.
'Well, that was fast.'
When he tilted his head away from the sky, he found that the purple-haired boy, who had apparently missed his shot, was giving him an extremely dirty look (or maybe it wasn't, he couldn't tell), to which he responded with a wave and a cheeky grin of his own.
'Oh, this would be great.'
---
"You really got some skills, there." Niou whistled, impressed. "I haven't seen Ishimaru throw his racquet this far since Kirihara beat him 6-0 last year."
"Were you expecting any less?" Yagyuu challenged flatly, folding his arms and raising his eyebrows.
"No, of course not!" He swung an arm around Yagyuu's neck and his grin widened a fraction when Yagyuu stiffened, but made no move to remove the offending object. "So, Hiro-kun," Niou said, as if they were continuing a conversation, "When're we gonna pick out a racquet of your own?"
"I have time this weekend."
"Great, I'll pick you up tomorrow at twelve."
Yagyuu opened his mouth and closed it again. He wanted to say something just then and he knew Niou knew he wanted to say something, but he didn't. It was alright, though. By the time Niou was through with him, Yagyuu would be able to say it.
'Oh, this was going to be magical.'
