I'm sorry to sound a bit of a cow here but, although I'm very sorry TP has alzheimers and I think it's generous of him to donate so much money ... isn't it kind of cheating to donate a load of money to a charity that's dealing with a disease you've just got?
Well, I don't really see how any donation to charity is 'cheating'. Even big firms who donate purely to get the tax breaks are still not 'cheating' - it just happens that they get something back as well as the charity.
Sure, TP is obviously donating to a cause that he has a personal interest in - does that mean Christopher Reeves wife shouldn't have done all the quadriplegic support she's done, or Paul Michael Glazer all the work for aids charities, just because they also have a personal interest? I think that's the way people's psyches work.
I know a lot of TPs fans were looking for a way to show their support and I think this fund is a praiseworthy organised way of doing that, basically. And hell, it was Pat Cadigan who orgnised it, not TP, so it's not like he's sticking out his hand himself!
(By the way, I'm at Eastercon, so haven't got much online access - sorry!
