If you have multiple antivirus's installed, they can fight against each other. You may want to consider downloading Avast (don't install it), uninstall all the others and then install Avast. Do a full system scan.
Also, go into your Programs and uninstall any toolbars that might be there (yahoo, ask, search, etc)
Lastly, check msconfig to see if there are things running that you don't recognize. You can disable (and enable again, if necessary) things that start on boot without uninstalling them.
If you really feel you have a virus, your best option may be to backup your data and perform a little R&R (reformat and reload).
My computer did something similar a few years ago. I could get programs to open, but they'd crash almost immediately. Eventually I gave up trying to fix it and did a full OS reinstall after backing up my data. Never did learn what caused it.
