An Old Story

This is a poem written by Edward Arlington Robinson, 1869-1935.  It is amazing how the words tell Jack an Ennis' story.

AN OLD STORY

Strange that I did not know him then,
     That friend of mine!
I did not even show him then
     One friendly sign;

But cursed him for the ways he had
     To make me see
My envy of the praise he had
     For praising me.

Oh, gut-wrenching! And so true. Ennis surely didn't fully understand the worth of what he had been offered until Jack died.

The line 'But cursed him for the ways he had', reminded me of their fight beside the river. Ennis accusing Jack of going to Mexico. Ennis' words, "All them things I don't know could get you killed, should I come to know them."
