If I'm ever caught for a crime punishable by the death penalty, once I've exhausted my legal defense options and appeals, I'd definitely volunteer for any kind of experimental euthanasia. For science.
That's the catch, though. People who commit crimes punishable by the death penalty are not usually benevolent enough to offer themselves up for the betterment of society. Until they find Jesus, anyway. But if they find Jesus, they probably think that suicide or assisted death is probably a one-way ticket to the hell that they've just seemingly gotten out of by seeking out The Big Guy in the first place. The best argument there, clearly, is that they signed up for the suicide/assisted death when they committed their crime (in the form of the death penalty). Not sure they'd buy it, though.
P.S. Got your invite - thank you! As you predicted, we will most likely not be attending, due to distance, the anniversary, and the fact that I'm graduating two days later. But we certainly appreciate it, and you have lovely handwriting.

In my case, whatever crime it was would have been for the betterment of society.
