My new blog

Dec 26, 2005 01:25

Short version of post: Check out the Latest Obsession! Read it, subscribe to it, LOVE IT! And yes this blog will still get updated with the more personal stuff. You know. The JOURNALY stuff. Cause it's liveJOURNAL.

Long version: There are two reasons/issues here, my identity's privacy and a blog's purpose.

PRIVACY: As is probably true of all of us, my web presence is all over the place. I've been wondering for some time now if I could/how I would get control of my internet identity; this concern was made trenchant by recent events. Everyone reading this knows my real name, although it's not present anywhere here (and if it is it shouldn't be, please let me know). iBeau #4 (who I mention without the friend protection because he won't even read my blog when I ASK him to) has a very distinct avatar/real name division that I only found through serious involved googling that uncovered a tiny lapse that I overlooked twice. So maintaining a serious presence online that is distinct from one's RL existence can be done.

One thing I'm not going to try very hard to do is hide clues. nemies lent me a book years ago about how to protect your privacy and in the current political/technological/nationalistic climate it's more relevant than ever. So, I'd mention that I work at NIH, for example, on the assumption that the effort it will take to get from there to my office address via hints about what I do is herculean enough that if someone can iTrack me down from that, I owe them a drink simply as a fellow Google master.

PURPOSE: This LJ isn't organized around anything (no, not even my love life). My knitting blog gets cobwebs when I put the needles down to move or whatever. My political junkie blog died for lots of reasons. And now I'm into photography. So the theme of my new blog is obsessions and the topic'll be whatever obsession currently has a hold of me. I've kicked blogger.com's stodgy ways to the curb and am heavy petting with wordpress, which (among other wonderfulnesses) allows tags. You'll see I am currently developing link lists for a few obsessions.
