Oh my god, that's a brilliant line, and doesn't that just sum up their relationship, too? Ferris is fantastic and terrifying and makes Cameron feel.

Cameron was never all that big a fan of hope; it felt too much like being on the brink of giving up. But when you have nothing left to lose, and everything to gain, sometimes hope is the only thing you can get a hold of and pray it doesn’t slip through your fingers. Because what could you possibly have left once you’d lost hope?

Hope, Cameron soon came to realize as his doctor explained the dark black spot on his MRI, was as loose as water. If you cupped your hands tight you could get a decent hold of it, you could trick yourself into thinking you had control, but eventually you’d have to let go.
