The Biggest Lie.

We have very literate conversations about Hemingway and Bukowski and tell ourselves that we're living for the sake of art and that this is why we can be drunk and high all the time. But the reality is that we'll never be great artists, never write those novels that are discussed in high school classrooms and seem to tilt the world on its axis when ( Read more... )

I disagree. Some of us will write novels that inspire adolescents out of childhood and provoke higher/deeper (take your pick) thought. Some of us write songs that just haven't been heard yet... you see, most people think differently, but are too afraid to show it. If you step out and become an exhibitionist, those damn lambs will follow and admit they like your shit. These are our memoirs--they're interesting in the moment, and later... they'll probably have disappeared. Nothing stays anymore--Hemmingway and Bukowski wrote in a different time. But you're right. Intellect is no excuse for underacheivement. I like that you're an English major, and I think you should make it so you don't end up one of the Amsterdamian gutter-dwellers you refer to.

I'm not saying that no one is going to write an earth-shattering new novel or make a mindblowing new record. I'm just saying it won't be me, but I use the notion that it might as an excuse to live the bohemian lifestyle anyway, which is bullshit.

Looking good in a gutter must be a rare but useful talent..
I guess what I'm thinking is that personally, as an artist, I notice all these other mediocre artists around me and try to comfort myself by thinking that I'm worth a little more. When really, I'm a terrible person and a hypocrite to do that. It seems like all these emo-heads are taking over the planet with their tears... when in fact, I'm sure all artists have felt that way in their respective eras.
I just pray this doesn't turn out to be "The Age of Emo" or anything... in that case, count me in the gutter category.

This is already the age of emo and don't think anyone can do anything about it. But i'm not trying to be emo, just trying to offer some sort of explanation for the psychology behind my lifestyle. And I guess the difference between us is that I feel like I'm surrounded by all these brilliant artists and I feel like maybe I'm worth a little bit less.
