The New, Improved Character Survey of Doom
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? He's super tall and just as skinny. 6'8" and about 170 pounds I guess. He's very lanky, like an overgrown Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. :|
2. How old is he? 23.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch? Very slouchy and relaxed.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? He's not very physically fit or strong. He doesn't really exercise much, or eat well, and he smokes a lot...
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Other than at a slow pace, he has moments of clumsiness relating to his height. He runs into things a lot.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror? Most Hatch men aren't the attractive sort. They're thin, lanky, and angular sorts of fellows, and Quinn is a prime example. And unless the semi-stoner look is appealing to you... Well, Quinn naturally thinks he's awesome, though.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Pretty pale, thanks to usually being awash in the glow of computer monitors alone.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style. Messy dark blonde hair, shoulder length and usually pulled back into a lazy ponytail. His eyebrows are darker than the hair on his head. Another common Hatch trait.
9. What color are his eyes? Blue.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? He's almost always wearing sunglasses, time of day be damned.
11. What are his chief tension centers? His shoulders? He's slumped over computers a lot.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit? He's a t-shirts and jeans sort of guy, with either old sandals or sneakers. Comfort is the key.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? Indeed! But they are a bit baggy, he just like them that way.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences? He does!
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? Boxers, occasionally commando o-oh god I don't want to think about that.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? In my head, he sounds like Johnny Knoxville.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate? Low and slow, baby. And confident as hell.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? He's got a slight Southern accent from being born and raised in North Carolina.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency? Just English... and several computer languages.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations? Nope~ though sometimes he might play up his accent to annoy people.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words? He's got a decent wit, and is confident enough to usually cover any fumbles.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? If someone proves him absolutely wrong, he'll usually lose his footing. He's hard to anger, but that'll do it.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart? A bit of both. He's actually very book smart, and learns quickly, though he usually doesn't show it.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate? He's better at thinking on his feet, which is why his family sends him off to negotiate things for them.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? A very logical lad, but at the same time, his own confidence can sometimes cloud his decisions.
4. What kind of education has the character had? He has a BA in Computer Science, and his family is trying to push him on to grad school. He's not really interested.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about? All things technological, especially computers, and he's a great hacker.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert? Such an extrovert!
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Laid back and lazy. But he usually pleasant enough, so long as you can put up with his ego.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? He loves people. :D
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react? Act. Life is short!
10. Which is his default: fight or flight? Flight. He's better at weaseling himself out of the messes he gets himself into.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Much like his cousin and best bro Jaris, everything is funny to him.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them? Nope, he's pretty stable!
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person? Mostly his family's reliance on him for everything. Inflated ego ahoy~
14. What does he fear? Becoming useless to his family, though he can't really imagine that happening. A-also, he hates snakes. 8|
15. What are his hopes or aspirations? Honestly he doesn't have many! He loves his work, his life... he just wants to continue doing what he does, which mostly is computer/machine stuff, travel to do negotiations, go clubbing, get laid and have fun. XD
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? He's an open book!
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents. He's an only child, and he's pretty close with his parents. Sometimes they get exasperated with his laziness or egotistical attitude though.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? n/a
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand? He's very close with his cousins, of which he has a lot. Where he comes from, magic tends to run in families, and those families stay close as a result. He gets along with almost all of them, especially Jaris, Micky and Becky. He tends to pick on Jaris's sister Eris a lot since she has such a bad temper.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them? He has some friends, but none that close. Uhhh "friends with benefits" is probably the nice way to put it.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? His cousin Jaris. They're only a year apart in age.
6. Does he have other close friends? n/a
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people? He gets along with anyone pretty well. Or he tries to.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends? Family. It's really important to mages in his world to stick with their families.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once? He's single, marriage being far from his mind.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? n/a
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest? None currently. As for his first? Hmm, I'm sure he has a high school sweetheart back in Charlotte...
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner? Someone who just likes to kick back and have a good time. Low stress, low maintenance. Nothing super-serious.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any? n/a
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies? There are some "rival" mage families that can't stand him. The McAllisters, especially. But they hate all the Hatches.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale? A 3. He really just doesn't give a damn.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him? Um, he loves it? A lot of it? From pretty much anyone? 8D So it's pretty important.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits? Haha, he's so not picky, I don't even know. He'd be someone who'd be all about trying new things.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type? He's a Taurus, which I think fits him pretty well. He's also a Rabbit, which he fits so-so.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life? He was raised as a Christian, but he doesn't really care to follow it too closely.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? He has a very very loose sense of morals. He's not going to murder or hurt people, but he breaks a ton of laws on a daily basis thanks to hacking.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? He's cool with whatever you want to believe, so long as you don't shove it down his throat.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them? He doesn't really have any. Ha, he's really not opinionated when it comes to stuff like that.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? HE is the reason his family lives comfortably.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him? I guess he's upper class? His family has gotten a lot wealthier thanks to him, and he's used to living in comfort and giving them what they want.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others? He lives in his own large loft alone, and it's full to the brim with electronics.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on? Whatever he wants. Vacations, more and more electronics, club-hopping, movies, video games....
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else? He just steals money to keep his family afloat by robbing various institutions online. He can cover his tracks almost completely thanks to his skills and his technomancy. He DJs on the side but not so much for the money, but for fun. In Mayfield he's a high school calculus teacher. He won't ever get used to the 9 to 5-style work life, but he doesn't mind hanging out with the high schoolers.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time? Movies and video games, clubs, music, jetting off on vacation...
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? He would eat out a lot, or get delivery. He wouldn't have much time to cook, nor would he care to. He eats a LOT as he has a crazy high metabolism.
