Twittermancy

Jul 21, 2009 12:55

I've made a small web application to aid in scrying. Similar in idea to 'Googlemancy', it uses Twitter search results to generate a 'tag cloud' style jumble of words, which you can interpret as you see fit.

I'm really interested in feedback - please let me know what you think, and if you've any ideas for how it can be improved. Leave a comment

Interesting idea, though I suspect I might find it more useful for entertainment than actual divination.

As an experiment, I entered the first name of someone I have been contemplating dating. I got back a whole lot of references to... garden tools. Not sure where to go with that, though I suppose if I were to relate it back to my usual divination method (ogham), gardening could point to gort, which is generally a pretty positive fid, so maybe it's saying go for it. :-)

I did the same thing and one of the largest words on the page was "awesome". Haha

Ha!

The weighting of the words is purely (pseudo-) random - it assigns each word a size using a 'random' function, just because I felt that having all the words the same size looked odd, and having them broken up made them easier to skim through.

Certainly the feedback I got from non-Pagan friends on Twitter was mostly 'lols'. But that's no bad thing - it wouldn't be the first toy app I did purely for the lols. :o)

It's entertaining. I find it similar to the "technique" of shuffling one's MP3 playlist and asking questions while hitting the "Random" button. One of the best results I got while doing that was asking "How do I become more like myself?" and immediately getting "Strip The Soul" by PT. Good shit, that.

Tool's a tool. My personal belief is that all the tools we use are just distraction techniques so our brains can find a way to consciously express subconscious knowledge or intuition.

Given the random noise produced by Twitter, this seemed an obvious tool to make (at 4am when I had the idea).

I quite like it, and I'd be more inclined to use this that other stone-chucking and tarot cards, and other assorted woo-woo.

Thank you. :o)

If you have any suggestions on, for example, usability, I'd love to hear them.

Btw, I posted this to Twitter (as user @tyrsalvia) and a bunch of people RT'd it, including Field's Books. I suspect you may get a bunch of new traffic today from it.
