oh great...now technology is the source of all evil

May 16, 2006 13:24

Some days, I wonder if those who identify as technopagans are really ever going to fit in with other Pagan-folk...this article certainly suggests that, for some factions, technology is the enemy, and the only way to be Pagan is to go all-natural...

From an article on Witchvox this week(snipped a bunch...it's rather long and rambling ( Read more... )

Pagans shouldn't try to ape the Book of Revelations -- Daniel was better at it, and funnier.

This is an extreme version of a surprisingly mainstream way of thinking in Paganism. Anything 'modern' is OMGTEHEVOL, and if anything should happen to actually be /modern/ (like, you know, Wicca), it has to pretend to be old.

Technology is seen as 'getting in the way' of true spirituality, mostly because the people that perpetrate this viewpoint are old hippies who can't work computers.

That's exactly why I founded this community. I'm not exactly a technogod or whatever, but I do use computers and other modern elements in my practices when appropriate, and I think it's ridiculous that some people refuse to use the most appropriate tool for the situation just because it's made of silicon instead of wood.

*nods* That's why I made unnaturalpagans too, although it's broader than just technopaganism.

This idea that we should all be trying to live some sort of mythical pre-technological rural idyll is just really annoying.

This is one of the reasons why I'm not going to this year's Scottish PF conference, even though it's about 20 minutes away from me in a venue I really like. The feel there is of a bunch of old hippies and their younger protégés out to show the world the One True Love Of The Goddess, OMGs.

But I digress. :o)

hey man, it was a bunch of old hippies who created personal computers! Apple is named apple because Steve Jobs was a fruititarian at the time, and apples were his favorite fruit. I'll bet you can guess what his favorite type of apple was. ;)

I guess growing up in California, I had a greater percentage of tech-positive pagans. Cuz while I've met a few that were extreme about things like "no metal in the circle" and such, most of them weren't "all technology bad". Now, they tend to think that certain technologies are bad - but not all tech. Or maybe I just have selective hearing that ignores the pitifully stupid. Sometimes it's hard to tell. ;)

This article was just.. well, dumb. I second the above opinion that it reads like someone who was trying to ape Revelations, and ends up sounding dumber than your average ape doing it.

...and they typed this on a computer and posted it on the Net.

I guess that use of technologies like.. oh, I don't know.. heart-lung machines or kidney dialysis machines are just as bad as manufacturing plants and the Net.

Yes, all things will eventually come to an end. That includes technology. Natural disasters happem - always have, always will, whether or not any people are around to be afflicted by them. No sense getting all NTFS and VMS about it.

This just makes me shake my head...
Our group has a guild set up for the Technomage. We have been met with many different reaction to this fact. Unfortunately they have been a lot like this article....grrrr
