Very exciting news today! Our local MP has had to resign and has been de-selected as a candidate for the election! Bascially, Tory MP and Deputy Party Chairman Howard Flight told other MPs at a meeting that the Tories were actually lying about their election pledges and would be making a load of cuts in public spending. Okay, I must ask: what's a Tory? I mean, it has a meaning in America, but hasn't really been used in ... a few hundred years. *curious*

Not that I know much about British politics, but Tories are the Conservative Party, right Elly? And Labour is more liberal than they are? And are there Social Democrats too?

I should learn these things before I come to England.

Yeah, Labour are traditionally more left-wing than the Conservatives and are more liberal over issues like immigration and benefits. Although under Tony Blair Labour and the Tories have almost become the same. We have the Liberal Democrats too, who are taking over some of Labour's old ground like making taxes more progressive and reducing university fees and the like. They also have more environmental policies. There's the Green Party too, but they're a bit of a shambles. And the UK Independence Party, who want the UK to leave Europe and are basically really bigoted. And Veritas, who are basically just Robert Kilroy Silk's big ego trip.

It's the Conservative party. It is quite an old-fashioned term, but it gets used over here quite a lot.

Yay!

It is so rare that good things happen in politics; when they do occur they must be celebrated.

Woo!

*celebrates*

I honestly didn't know how we'd ever get rid of him. It's rather ironic and sad that he's actually been sacked for telling the truth when the rest of the party just keeps on lying.

Go Derek!

When I come over to the UK, can I join in the fight for the prevalence of the Lib Dems? Plis?

Yay! You totally must, they need all the help they can get. Poor sods. They really need to organise themselves better before they can become a convincing challenge to New Labour. But at least Howard Flight's cock-up means we might finally get an MP who's not a millionaire fuckwit who doesn't really give a shit about the people who live in his constituancy.
