twenty five years old. (november 19, 1955.)
a former Ravenclaw.
a muggleborn.
a musician (somewhat)
a father (always)
a husband (forever)
When Ted Tonks was five years old, he began taking piano lessons. His fingers were clumsy and it was hard to learn, especially when every time he botched a note he was rapped over the knuckles with a baton. Ted didn’t like piano very much, but he did always show an interest in playing the guitar and playing the drums. His uncle Andrew bought him a ukulele for his birthday and Ted played it until all the strings broke and he got callouses on his fingers. And even when he had them, and even when he had to bang on pots and pans and sing along to keep himself amused, even through all this Ted decided that he wanted to have music in his life, for all of his life.
When Ted Tonks was seven years old, his mother told him that he should be a policeman when he grew up. Policemen were paid well and respected and he would be set for all his years and he would even get to retire at a relatively young age. Women fell over themselves to marry bachelor policemen. They always were set above the rest of the population, to protect and serve. Ted’s mother said that this was a good-if-not-great job for any upstanding British man, and for awhile, Ted really believed that fighting crime and arresting bad guys was the job for him.
When Ted Tonks was nine years old, his father took him fishing out at the pond, where all the other fathers took their sons, and where the boys all built paper boats and set them off one by one, over lily pads and beyond the thistles. Ted thought that being a professional fisherman would be a good career for a bloke like him, what with sitting about all day and waiting for the line to snag. It would be an easy way to make good money, and here, out on the pond, you had all the time in the world to think and change your mind. Then his line snagged and he lost his new fishing rod into the murky, algae-infested deep.
When Ted Tonks was eleven years old, he found out that he had magical blood and therefore could go to a special school located inside a castle to learn all about magic and how to be a wizard. His mother said, this explained why Ted seemed to magically vanish whenever it was time to come in and go to bed. His father said, what, like bloody Merlin? Ted was thrilled and wanted to go so badly that he begged and he begged and little did he know, all that constant begging would pay off so well and shape the rest of his life.
When Ted Tonks was twelve years old, he met a girl named after a star that was in the same house and year as him, the same house named after the wise and intelligent woman that was the original founder of the school and the same year which meant they were the same age. The girl’s name was Andromeda-Call-Me-Andy, and the first time he met her, Andromeda-Call-Me-Andy said that she wasn’t supposed to talk to Ted, but she did anyway. She said that Ted was a mudblood but she didn’t like that word and she didn’t like that she couldn’t talk to him even though he was right there so why not? Ted didn’t complain, because he didn’t realise mudblood was actually a bad thing and now all those Slytherins yelling at him made a whole lot more sense.
The first night he met Andromeda, they worked on a History of Magic essay together because Ted missed some notes and Andromeda had a bulleted list. Ted told jokes and Andromeda folded a bit of parchment into a flower. They both got the essay done and if anyone was telling the truth, both of them got a friendship out of it, too.
When Ted Tonks was fifteen years old, he and Andromeda went to the Quidditch pitch to watch Ravenclaw play Hufflepuff, the semi-finals for the school’s Quidditch Cup. They were both wearing blue and Andromeda charmed the ends of her hair into a nice blue colour. Ted liked the blue but he said he liked her natural hair a lot more, and isn’t it funny, how you can change your hair, just like that? The score was 190-70 when the Ravenclaw seeker caught the snitch and the both of them were so caught up with it, so in the moment, that Ted hugged Andromeda and she hugged him and then Ted kissed her.
He never apologized, and just like that they were dating.
When Ted Tonks was sixteen he decided he would get a muggle job during the summer at a record company. He filled out the forms and over the summer he was an intern in an office, filing papers and answering calls and for the most part going unnoticed. Then one day his boss saw that Ted liked talking with the actual bands themselves to get the information right. And that Ted always took the most care with each thing relating to the band. He asked Ted, Do you play? And then Ted played some songs on the guitar and sang along and his boss said, you come back next summer.
When Ted Tonks was eighteen and Andromeda was eighteen and they were both out of school, Ted got a promotion at the record company. He would soon become a talent spotter, which meant that he got to go to all the local shows to find new bands to sign. He worked in the office, but made routine checks to the sound studios to help mix and chat with the bands about the style aspect and about the business aspect. Two weeks later, Ted asked Andromeda to marry him. Two months later, Andromeda was pregnant.
When Ted Tonks was nineteen years old, he could finally afford a home in the country for himself, Andromeda, and their baby girl, called Nymphadora. It would be away enough, far enough to be out of the city, but it would be easy enough to get there if they wanted. Ted could apparate to and from work, and Nymphadora, as she grew up, could safely run about in the grass, the fields, behind the trees. She could blend in and never be found, at least until her mother calls her in for tea and biscuits.
When Ted Tonks was twenty years old, he accidentally lost Nymphadora when they were shopping together in the market. One second, he was holding the baby in his arms, her babbling on and on about something that he couldn’t quite understand, and then the next moment he was holding a pineapple with big blue eyes. This was how he found out his daughter had the ability to change herself at will. And from then on, he had to be extra careful, lest he find himself with a duck instead of a daughter.
Now Ted Tonks is twenty five years old, works in an office belonging to a record company, is a supervisor, and a talent spotter. Dora is going on seven years old. The war is on, and the threat against muggleborns and muggles is becoming worse and worse. Though, his home is protected, and his family is, to the best of his knowledge, safe. That’s really all that matters.
Well, that, and making sure Dora doesn’t decide to be a rhinoceros all day again.
