My understanding is that weapons could be held by the toes as well. Yes, you're right, it doesn't make much sense when you can use your hands. But it is amazing to watch masters at work.

it's not a martial art in the same vein that I'm accustomed to. It's not about immediate practical application. Or even practical application at all. It's about the game of it, the dance. American Breakdancing is actually born out of capoeira.
