I think I've actually been through that checkpoint. To their credit, there are a few in the AZ and NM area that make sense to be 50 miles in since the first 50 miles are open desert and anyone coming in would be coming along the east/west highway there. I do, however, find it amusing that the "screening" process is to ask you what country you are from and send you on your way. I guess they are looking for people who act nervous, but most people get nervous when faced with federal agents.
It is interesting that they'd put checkpoints that far in. Wouldn't an actual illegal know where it was and just go around it? Especially in a place like White River Junction.
