We tried a chemistry set - someone gave him one for Christmas. He went on at me for weeks to open it up and try it out with him and, when we did, he lost interest as soon as he saw it was just a bunch of bits of paper that changed colour, some liquids that went a different shade of blue and some tiny crystals which took a month to form. I think he was expecting magic rainbows, explosions and great clouds of choking gas, and the reality was a tad underwhelming. Maybe we can try again once he's grown an attention span. :)

I had both a chemistry set and a microscope at his age, and the microscope was the thing that really grabbed my attention. Something as simple as looking at onion skin and then dying it different colors can keep a kid occupied for hours. Or bugs! Bugs under the microscope are amazing!
