Through a gmail account you can set up Google Alerts on your own name. It will send you a short message and link any time your name comes up in a Google search.
This is VERY handy to keep track of where you can be found on the internet. It has helped me locate a few holes here and there that I've been able to track or change. I have Alerts set up for real names, nicknames and all of my families names. It's been VERY good for security. It really helps eliminate mysteries about where people are finding you.

Otherwise, yeah, making things private is a good thing.
