On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
Nick looks at Dan trying to find answers to the questions he's been asking himself for years now.
'Have you ever thought...'
'What?' Dan stops tying his shoes and looks up at Nick who chuckles softly and shakes his head.
'Have you ever thought about what happened if we were teammates?'
Dan looks puzzled, although Nick knows perfectly well that the defender understood him.
'Yes', Nick continues. 'If I were in Liverpool or you were in Arsenal... I mean... that would be great... we could...'
'That would be absolutely the same, if not worse'.
The single phrase makes Nick shut up and just stare into Dan's blank face. Both are too tired to speak after all the flying, training, the whole season of madness and disappointments. Both just wish they could understand each other without words.
They are looking at each other, into each other's eyes for a few moments and Nick cannot find the answers he needs. He finds the others though.
'Is that really all that you feel?' Nick finally breaks the silence. 'Just that?'
Dan finally manages to deal with his shoes and stands up.
'Yes, Nick, just that. That is all I feel and need. I’m sorry'.
And as they head to the door, the hall, the elevator, the hall again, the door again and the fancy limo, Nick just keeps fighting the urge to slap Dan as hard as he can.
‘What? Is this the fact that I’m actually taller than you now?’ he asks when they finally get into the car, trying not to smile but giving up in the end after Dan turns to face him and smiles biting his lip then ruffling Nick’s hair as if it wasn’t ruffled enough before. Whatever it is that Nick feels towards Dan, he doesn’t know what it is… but he wants it to last.
