Enough is enough.

It's been nine days, a week and a half, and Charlie's had enough of feeling like an asshole. Both Neil and Juno spoke a lot of sense and, if he was honest with himself, they had only been telling him what he'd decided for himself. Whatever had happened, it wasn't the worst thing that could have happened, and nothing was ever ( Read more... )

Caspian and Edmund had been sparring for the better part of the last half hour, and at this moment any observer coming upon them would not have thought it likely they would be finished anytime soon. It was not quite the same as it would have been in Narnia, of course, but as they were both determined to keep in practise they were having rather a good go of it.

Edmund had just got in a blow that would have been rather unfortunate had Caspian not ducked just in time for it to hit his heavy leather gauntlet instead. Caspian grunted, stepped back, and brought his sword round to meet Edmund's; the two blades clanged together with the sweet ring of Narnian steel and Caspian grinned.

There was nothing better for getting Edmund's mind off things than sparring. It wasn't war; he didn't need to be thinking of where to send troops or if the enemy had launched some surprise attack. It was just him and Caspian, his mind working only two steps ahead of them, and the jarring rhythms of steel.

He grinned too when the blades came together, but wasted no time in pressing his attack. One, two strikes, and perhaps he would have gotten Caspian off balance and yielding, except Ed happened to catch sight of someone outside their battle. "By the mane," he cursed under his breath, and surely Caspian would be the only one to hear it as they were locked together. Edmund didn't let drop his sword, but he held his attack.

This is not something that he has to deal with in Franklin. Charlie stares. There's another guy there, but Charlie's eyes are pretty much fixed on Edmund, and there's no accounting for the way his stomach sort of drops away.

"Shit...I..." He glances over his own shoulder. "If I'm interrupting, I can come back..."

It only took a quick glance at the newcomer for Caspian to realise that he was there to see Edmund. Perhaps the boy in whom Edmund was interested, from the slightly awkward way he looks and the way Edmund cursed. Caspian could have taken the advantage of Edmund's distraction to press foward, but instead he twisted his wrist to wrench his blade free, then stepped back, raising his sword in an acknowledgement that their fight had ended.

"Not at all," he assured the other fellow. "We were just finishing, before Edmund could give me a sound thrashing." He sheathed his sword and nodded. "You won't be so lucky tomorrow," he told Edmund, only partially joking, and grinned before he headed off down the path for home.
