At home, Charlie had tried to stay occupied. He'd read a little, written a little, played cards with himself. He'd gone for a swim in the waterfall pool and all of it waiting for Edmund. Edmund took his time getting back to Charlie. He wasn't trying to avoid the other boy; in fact, all he really wanted to do was hurry to the Hamlet and curl up in Charlie's arms. But first he had to talk to Susan, and then find Jill, and then he thought to go report Peter's disappearance to the council and get his name on the memorial (again). He'd tried to eat, but gave up on that pretty quickly ( ... )

It's the knocking that does it. Charlie starts, wakes up enough to lift his head and watches Edmund walk into the room. He didn't realise how tense he was until he felt the way that his shoulders relaxed a little, seeing the other boy.

He reaches out with one hand.

"C'mere," he murmurs, voice still thick with sleep.

He paused to toe off his shoes, but really Edmund didn't hesitate. It might have frightened him to realize how much he needed Charlie so soon after losing someone else he needed terribly, but he couldn't hold off going to Charlie's side under any pretense. If it was weak, then let him be weak.

Ed took Charlie's hand and didn't stop there, climbing onto the bed and tucking himself in against his body.

He lies still until Ed's settled himself and then he fits in around him, arms curled around him to hold him tight, fingers pushing into his hair. He drops a kiss onto Ed's forehead, follows it up with a trio right against his hairline.

It's the only way he can say don't leave me right now.
