you seemed to hold your own just fine when discussing philosophy with chris. he's a phd student, after all, so don't sell yourself short in the philosophy department.

I have what I would call a rather niche understanding of philosophy... so while I can discuss my own personal interests at length, if I ever get into a discussion with someone that starts some serious name dropping I quickly get lost. That and I hate post-modern theory. I consider myself more of a modernist that never lost the feeling.

you know, this brings up an interesting point. I hate to sound sexist but I typically have a much more comfortable time discussing politics with guys than girls. Political discussions I've had with guys tend to remain "discussions", with a respectful exchange of ideas and opinions... while if I bring up the same points with many girls, it tends to quickly descend into a very personal, impassioned debate, typically with a good bit of competitive intimidation and name-calling. Sure im generalizing here, but I also know that Ive spouted off on my political feelings a lot, and of the 50-some people that have reacted aggressively offensive, maybe 90% were girls. I mean, ive had guys tell me that I was full of shit, but they at least tend to be measured and polite, and afterwards we have a beer and laugh about it. And you know, every time I open my mouth with a political opinion I don't want it to turn into a contest of seeing whose balls are bigger, so lately ive kinda tried to stay shut up.
