This one is for the nerds among you

I think I've brought up on here that I am a bit of a computer gamer. If I am at home and not reading, eating, or sleeping, I am probably sitting here happily blowing shit up.  Unfortunately, this was brought to a sudden end the week before last when my computer mysteriously imploded. I had been having weird little problems ever since my last sound ( Read more... )

I must be an enthusiast, because I have all the kit you mentioned. ;)

My only question is why you didn't spring for the 8800GTS 640mb. Much better, not blindingly more expensive.

The WD Raptor is a nice fast disk, but too small to keep up these days, IMO. My three times larger 7200 HD does fine.

eh... I got a good price on the 320, and was working under a budget. At the time I was thinking of getting an 8600, so the 8800 in itself was a boon... I have been completely pleased with it though. So far the only game I've seen that has required over 256 megs for ultra texture quality mode has been Doom 3.

I use the raptor as my boot drive and for storing my better games. I have a second high-cap drive that I use for general purpose installing and storage. I haven't really had any problems, and it has really improved my load and boot times.

What do you play, anyway? I never knew you were big on the PC gaming.

We talked about how hot I was for Oblivion, as soon as I could afford a computer that could actually run it. Well, as soon as I could, I bought parts and built one. I have yet to run across a game I can't run at full graphical settings without slowdown (although my SLI 8800s occasionally have a hiccup.) Today, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. It's not a perfect system, my rig, but it's a delicate balance out here at the cutting edge.

I was just thinking about oblivion earlier... I really have no idea where I left my guy. I might want to just start over, now that I have a computer that can actually run it properly, and can put on all the pretty graphics and environment mods.

I'd have gone Mushkin over corsair on RAM, but other than that it doesn't sound like a bad box. All you kids are making me want to run a rebuild... Alas, soon the doom-box will be complete.
