Part of the premise of (ick) Battlefield Earth is that the evil metal obsessed aliens came to earth after finding the plaque... since it was coated with Gold.

Funny Synchronicity... I was having fun reading the Wiki entry for Carl Sagan today, who advocated and designed the plaque.
