Character Name: Shigure Sohma
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Sexuality (if applicable): Bisexual
Original or Anomaly?: Original
Appearance:
Dark hair, dark eyes, slimmy! He's considered attractive in his canon.
Personality: At first glance Shigure would seem like a normal rich teenager; lazy, laid-back and very interested in sex. With a deeper glance you'd get more of the rich boy qualities. Neglected by his parents, smart, something of a rebel and with a superiority complex.
It'd take several glances and some luck to get to know him beyond that. Although he is a rich kid, a lot of what one would get upon meeting him is just a facade. Shigure will grow up to be a man of many masks; as a kid he's slowly growing into them.
Shigure can either the be smarmy teenager who is sure of himself and thinks he can get away with anything, the polite one, who will introduce himself with a smile and offer a drink, or the angry one who wants to be left alone and refuses any sort of help. The truth is, the world has taught Shigure to be manipulative; he knows what to do and to say to get what he wants from people, if he wants to be liked he'll behave in a way that will make people like him. If he wants to be left alone, he'll be a jerk. Underneath the act, he's not an evil kid; he's selfish, he always puts himself first and he won't go out of his way to help a stranger, but he will to help a friend. He tries not to make too many of those, though, because he's afraid of being betrayed or hurt. He's only close to his cousins, Ayame, Hatori and, to a lesser degree, Kureno. And being close to them is "safe" because they are cursed like him.
He can be cruelly honest, and not even his friends are safe from that. He's not afraid to point out his friends flaws or failings, and has asked Ayame if he even remembers his younger brother's name while smiling. Shigure loathes self-deceit, and he thinks that by being honest he's doing people a favor. No that he can't be tactful, but when he is, he's normally acting.
Despite his flaws and asshattery, he's extremely loyal and protective to those he cares for. And once Shigure cares about someone, he never really stops.
History:
The Sohma family has been cursed by the spirits of the Chinese Zodiac for generations. The cursed members of the family can't hug members of the opposite sex without transforming into their respective animal, and they also transform whenever they're weak or stressed. Shigure is the dog. He's the only son of a couple who's never paid much attention to him, so he's growing up without adult figures. He took a liking to books early on, and now he's friends with two other Sohma kids, also cursed. Hatori and Ayame (the dragon seahorse and the snake respectively)
The three of them are known as the Mabudachi Trio and are very popular in the all-boys school they attend. Ayame and Shigure are both known as pranksters, whereas Hatori is the responsible one.
The main difference between this younger Shigure and the Shigure we meet later on in canon, is that this one hasn't gone through most of the life-changing events older Shigure does. In canon, Hatori falls in love and when he decides to get married, Akito attacks him, almost making him lose an eye and causing Hatori's lover, Kana, to fall into a deep depression. This affects Shigure very much and it makes him reconsider the curse and their lives and what he wants of them. This younger Shigure hasn't gone through that, so he's rougher, less concerned with appearing healthy and cheerful and less goal-driven than his older counter part is.
Younger Shigure is not happy with the cards he was dealt, but he is not unhappy enough to try to change them. He loves and is completely devoted to Akito, he loves his cousins and even though he doesn't like being cursed and will do his best to hide the fact that he is, he accepts it in that reluctant way teenagers accept things.
Strengths: He's sharp, he's good at reading people and very often can tell if they're lying. He's especially good at picking at people's feelings even if he doesn't know the person very well, and he uses this to his advantage. He's also very quick to react to a crisis, and although he hates playing leader and is more of a one-man team, he can take the role with very little apparent effort.
He knows martial arts and is good enough at it to be able to defend himself from normal people, he's not very strong physically, though, so if given the option between fight or flight, he'll most likely flee.
As for supernatural stuff, he can talk to dogs, wolves and other canines because he is cursed by the spirit of the first Dog. Also, because of it, these animals are naturally attracted to him. Due to the same curse, he transforms into a black dog whenever he is weak, stressed, sick, or hugged by a female (this makes perfect sense in shoujo manga) and the transformation lasts anything between a few seconds to several minutes.
Weaknesses: Despite not looking like a sickly boy, cursed Sohmas have weak bodies. This is perhaps due to the strain of having two souls inhabiting a single body. So Shigure gets sick easier than an average person and has a weak constitution.
Also because of the curse, he has a number of complexes and issues. The lack of relationship with his parents left him without adult role models, and being cursed forced him to isolate himself. He thinks he is smarter than most people, but at the same time he considers himself worthless, and even though he tries his best to seem like an adult, emotionally he is still very young. He is somewhat aware of this, so he behaves like a jerk, partly as a defense mechanism and partly because he really is one.
Oh, and he is very easily thrown off by any sort of physical affection, simply because he never gets any.
First Person Sample:
... so either a cracked out dream, an alien abduction or some sort of joke.
GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS MARTIANS. I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR AN ABDUCTION SO WOULD YOU KINDLY LET ME OUT?
Nothing? Nah, it wouldn't be that easy. It was still worth a try. Well then, my name is Shigure, I'm from Japan, Earth, 20th century, and it's been three weeks since my last alien encounter.
Third Person Sample:
It wasn't often that he found himself reflecting upon his life. He didn't like it, reflections were for old people, but it had been a boring day and his cousins had refused to skip classes with him. So there he was, lying face up in the old playground, wondering how different his life would be if he'd been born normal. In a normal home, with normal parents.
If he wasn't a Sohma.
It was the old "nature versus nurture" thing. A teacher had brought it up and some kids had gotten very excited over it. It had been a stupid debate as far as he was concerned. Nurture would beat nature, always. If you grew up in a place where you either killed or died, you'd learn to kill. If Hitler had had a normal life he wouldn't have turned out to be a genocidal maniac. If his own parents ever looked at him, then maybe he'd say "please" and "thank you" like polite boys did.
If they weren't cursed then...
He sighed, sitting up. That line of thought wasn't going to take him anywhere. At least not anywhere he felt like going. It's not like it mattered anyway, he was a Sohma and there was nothing he could do about it.
He considered briefly heading to school, do the last couple of classes, find Aaya and Haa-san and maybe pull that prank they'd been plotting. But if he did that, he'd have to deal with Haa-san's angry glaring, and a teacher going on and on and on about responsibility and about how lucky he was to be able to attend such a prestigious school. Shigure could only roll his eyes so much before getting a headache.
He headed to the woods instead. He would have gone downtown, but it was too early for any bars to be open and he'd left his fake ID at home. The woods were nice, sometimes a dog or two would come over, and he'd get to hear all about how much they liked to chase rats and cats and sticks. He liked doing that a lot; dogs were very simple. They either liked things or didn't, their only worries were what they were going to eat and their human masters, if they had any. Once he'd entertained the idea of living like one. Running away, becoming a hobo and living off scraps whenever he transformed. He'd even tried, those had been ten, extremely interesting hours. He'd been seven, so he still considered it a feat.
But of course a Sohma wouldn't just be allowed to run away, no matter how little his parents cared. He was cursed, if he died then someone else would be cursed. The Sohmas who knew wouldn't want that. It was the duty of a cursed one to live a long unhappy life.
... there he was again, thinking unnecessary things. He dug inside his pockets for a smoke and glanced up as he was lighting it.
The cigarette fell from between his parted lips. Assuming he wasn't dreaming, and maybe even if he was, his day had just become way less boring.
