ANIMATION MEME - X what you saw - O what you haven't finished/seen or saw sizable portions - Bold what you loved - Italicize what you disliked/hated - Leave unchanged if neutral
The three animated Tolkiens were the reason I was convinced nobody could do a decent movie of LOTR. I was so happy to be proved wrong. R-B's versions aren't great - WTF is it with animation and bad songs? - but they're a million times better than Bakshi's rotoscoped tedium. Ick.
You'd think it would be easier to film an animated version than live, wouldn't you? It's hilarious to read the great number of stupid, duh-worthy goofs in the animated version on its IMDb page. I remember watching it in '78 and suddenly realizing that the bad guys various characters kept referring to--Saruman, Alloman, and Aruman--were all the same character. There was no one to keep track of the pronunciation, apparently.
I used to refer to Rankin & Bass as "Rank Bastards" but they did try to do a good job--the problem is, they went into it thinking they were making children's movies, and there's nothing of interest in either movie for an adult. They play like the leeched-of-all-interest, soft-pedaled Saturday morning kiddie programs of the same era.
