religion causes conservatism towards science. china has never been that religious so until it's a real distinct life, no one sees it as taking a life. also, the conservatism in china is highly intertwined with confucianism and tradition. if you look at it long enough, it's really easy to see. my dad is deadly conservative, but he'd never admit it. he just sees it as progress where progress should be and keeping traditions when they are good. rather interesting, really.

i don't know anything about econ either, but maybe building all that infrastructure etc is actually good. it provides jobs and people from the country side can move into the city. fewer workers there, right? so then they CAN move in tractors, etc.

well, just a random thought.

I think China should slow down a little, also. First of all, industrialization is killing their environment. The air pollution is terrible. Second of all, they're using dangerous substances in manufacturing that could potentially be fatal to the consumer.

I hope you're enjoying China. Come back and teach me Mandarin! And yeah, Tiff said humidity was pretty bad...:(

Cool update :-) - and some good food for thought. Have you/will you see the countryside while you're there?
