Jayne/River
A little ficlet that has lots of spoilers from the Big Damn Movie. Jayne and River come to an understanding.

The way she moves is hypnotic.

You would think she's dancing, but all she's doing is piloting the ship, even that she makes graceful somehow.

Jayne watches her from the doorway. He knows a bit about how Serenity works, not enough to fly her if it came down to it though, and the way River makes all of it seem so easy fascinates him.

"I've got eyes in the back of my head, you know." River says suddenly, not even bothering to turn around. "Can't sneak up on me."

"Wasn't sneakin'." He says petulantly.

River flips a few more switches before spinning around to face him, feet tucked up under her in the chair. The cockpit door slides shut behind him, damn her for having those controls right in front of her, effectively trapping him there. He leans against it, arms crossed over his chest defensively.

"Serenity flies herself." She tells him sagely. "She only lets me help because she likes to be touched."

Jayne scoffs. "You sayin' this boats got feelings?"

"Of course she does. It wouldn't be right if she didn't." River answers patiently. "Please and thank you...she likes it when you're polite, Jayne."

"Oh, yeah?" He growls skeptically. "What else she got to say about me?"

River smiles at him slyly. "Shhh...a lady must have some secrets."

Jayne can't help the smirk that crosses his face.

She gets up and starts to move closer and he clears his throat nervously. "Well, uh...just don't start thinkin' you're all important now just cause the Captain's letting you pilot the ship every once and awhile." His eyes dart around the cabin, avoiding her steady gaze. "You still got a few screws loose, crazy girl."

She stops right in front of him, the top of her head barely reaching his shoulders. She's close enough that he can feel the warmth coming off of her in waves. He finally looks down, her breath ghosting across his neck as she tips her head back to meet his eyes.

"Don't be frightened anymore, Jayne."

"I'm not." He replies unconvincingly, body trembling simply because she's so close.

"She doesn't want you to be afraid." She murmurs softly, palm lifting to slide along his cheek. "She wants you to stop feeling guilty, stop worrying about what will happen to her."

Jayne's eyes slip closed at her touch and he lets out a sigh of relief. "Is this Serenity or you we're talkin' about here?"

River rises up onto her toes to place a kiss on the tender spot on the underside of his jaw. "Both of us."
