Challenge
Jayne/River
PG-13
A little Jayne/River ficlet that takes place at the end of the BDM when everyone was repairing and fixing Serenity.
There's a moment during all the clean up, all the repairs, where they pass each other in the cargo bay and River glances at him, and it's like she actually saw him not simply looked through him.
"No more pretendin' now, little girl." He growls.
She's carrying a bundle of wires, broken circuits that need repairing, but she spins around when she hears Jayne speak.
"Awful handy at times. Bein' crazy." He clarifies. "Don't have to own up to nothin' do ya?"
River tilts her head and gazes at him curiously. "What do I not own up to?"
Jayne's grin is smug and when he hooks his thumbs in his belt loops, it's just downright cocky. "The doc's your kin, and that just ain't right. Mal and 'nara can't stop makin' googly eyes at one another. Figures that only leaves me."
"You?" She simply offers him a raised eyebrow.
"Me." He shrugs. "When you start gettin' those urges, like the rest of us un-crazy people."
River sizes him up carefully. "You've put quite a bit of thought into this."
He only takes a small step toward her, but there's something desperate and wanting in the movement. "Won't be no thinkin' at all once I get done sexin' you up."
River suddenly realizes this is the first time they've been in such close proximity without one of them yelling or slicing at the other. She sways forward on her feet, quite enjoying this new game they're playing.
"Jayne Cobb." She murmurs. "That sounds like a challenge."
