Unexpected

Jayne/River
Set after River fights the reavers in Serenity.

I haven't written Jayne/River in such a long time. *happy sigh* I'm glad I could finally get this one out.

Jayne carries her back to the ship after it's all over, trying to ignore the pain in his shoulder and concentrate instead on the frail girl in his arms. Hard to believe only a few moments ago she was taking on more than a dozen reavers. That thought makes Jayne hold onto her even tighter, and he wonders where the urge to protect her came from.

He heads toward her bunk, knowing the med bay's going to be full up. Jayne's used to tending his own wounds and he knows most of the blood on her is from the ones that she killed.

River mumbles against his shoulder when he tries to lay her down in the bed and her hands scramble along his shoulders trying desperately to stay in his arms.

"This'll have to do." He says lowly, trying to place her gently on the mattress, but she's having none of it. "Gorrammit, River." He growls and she gasps, head lifting up to lock eyes with him.

"A proper name places value on something previously thought to be worthless." She murmurs.

His brow furrows in confusion. "What's that supposed to mean?" He can't help but bring his hand up to try to wipe away the streak of blood along her cheek. River closes her eyes and he can feel something prickle along the back of his neck. "You in my head?"

River whimpers and leans into his touch. "Let me in, Jayne. Please, let me in."

He doesn't know what to do exactly, so he does something unexpected.

He kisses her.

Suddenly, there's something warm traveling through him and the only way he knows how to describe it is River. He pours frustration and hope and anger and love, everything he's feeling in that moment, into the kiss.

River moves in his arms, shifting until she's got her legs wrapped around his waist and it's only then that he pulls back. She doesn't let him go far, her hands are against the back of his neck, pulling his forehead to rest against her own. He stumbles forward until she's against the wall and thrusts up against her purely on instinct.

"River, I-" He begins, but his voice breaks off in a moan when she lifts her hips to meet his.

They're tired. Both of them panting, using the last of their strength to chase completion, and it doesn't take long for River to start shuddering against him and Jayne to spill himself along the front of his pants.

He slumps against her and opens his mind, letting her see everything.
