If a caster summons a creature for, lets say 7 rounds, but is reduced to 0 hit points or otherwise rendered unconscious in 3 rounds, do the summoned creatures stick around for their remaining 4 rounds?

Assuming you're talking about D&D 3.5 (the version we all played together), no, they do not stick around once reduced to 0 or fewer HP. To quote the System Reference Document:
When the spell ends or is dispelled, a summoned creature is instantly sent back to where it came from, but a summoned object is not sent back unless the spell description specifically indicates this. A summoned creature also goes away if it is killed or if its hit points drop to 0 or lower. It is not really dead.

It's possible you misunderstood the question - or maybe I did, the grammar is rough. ;)
I think he's asking if the summoned creatures stay around if the caster is killed or knocked unconscious. In which case, to my understanding, they do - but they cannot be given further orders unless the caster is reanimated.

Ah, yes. That's possible. If the CASTER is the one rendered insensate, yes, the critter remains for the duration, carrying out whatever orders it was last given.

Located underneath the "Summoning" heading in the Magic chapter of the Player's Handbook.
