I’m not going to lie, I actually watched the movie first, and while I liked Veidt (he wasn‘t my favorite, however), and loved Matthew Goode, it wasn't really until I read the book that I realized how awesome and complex the character actually was (for my money, more so than Rorschach). While I tend to find the medium of the movie a bit hard to express the whole of his character complexities, I focused on what I could show given the footage. He spent 19 years worrying about the end of the world and struggling to prevent it. If the other Crimebusters could understand what was going on in his head for so long, maybe they would begin to see why he did what he thought had to be done.
(side note: the Karnack bits of the novel were some of my favorite pages, but I love what was done in the movie equally, if not more so, due to the awesome footage it produced. Even if there is ONE PAGE that I kind of wanted in it. I can‘t have everything.)
Whittled this down from 1200 words it had a week or so ago, and I'm still not 100% sure I said everything I wanted to say (but I'm also not sure I did in the 1200 word long version)! I have extensive thoughts on this subject matter. Obviously.

Lyrics
I would tell you about the things
They put me through.
The pain I've been subjected to.
But the Lord himself would blush.
The countless feasts laid at my feet,
Forbidden fruits for me to eat.
But I think your pulse would start to rush.
Now I'm not looking for absolution,
Forgiveness for the things I do.
But before you come to any conclusions -
Try walking in my shoes,
Try walking in my shoes.
You'll stumble in my footsteps,
Keep the same appointments I kept.
If you try walking in my shoes.
If you try walking in my shoes.
Morality would frown upon,
Decency look down upon.
The scapegoat fate's made of me.
But I promise now, my judge and jurors,
My intentions couldn't have been purer.
My case is easy to see.
I'm not looking for a clearer conscience,
Peace of mind after what I've been through.
And before we talk of any repentance -
Try walking in my shoes.
Try walking in my shoes.
You'll stumble in my footsteps,
Keep the same appointments I kept.
If you try walking in my shoes.
If you try walking in my shoes.
Try walking in my shoes.
