A Question!

Ok, either I'm stupid or there is one BIG misunderstanding...

Jack's compass. It points to the thing one's heart desires. Yeah, got that. But why do people say it points at Jack in CotBP when Norrington is holding it? I mean, I'm all for it. Just...

Well, technically, the disc is the needle. Well, it's the needle if you think of the needle in terms of modern day compasses. The pointy, triangular thing isn't actually the "needle." On Jack's compass, the "needle" is the little arrow on the disc.

But, personally, even though I'm all for the compass pointing to Jack when Norrington holds it, I've never been able to actually make out the compass in that scene. So... *shrug*

Yes, that's it! I think people think that this pointy, triangular thing is the needle (the thing that points). But it isn't! And you don't actually SEE the disc!!! Ergo you don't know where the compass points! *nods*

The "needle" "is" the disc.

The triangular thing is a sundial. But when he tilts it, I believe the "disc" is visible.

Erm yes, I knew that, but it seems I didn't manage to show that... ;)

Ah! That's the word!!! Thanks!
Do you really see the disc? But what do you see then? North not pointing north? *looks for CotBP DVD*

Maybe it's just wishful thinking. :D
I like the idea of the compass pointing at Jack - for so many reasons. :D

The deal with that is, in DMC the pointy bit is this great big honking red thing on the disc - and in the frame where most of the disc is visible, there is no great big pointy arrow thing, and the only bit that's covered up by the sundial is pointing at Jack. At least, that's my rationale. (Never mind that the compass-disc changed in appearance between the movies! *hides*)

I really don't have a clue... But this sounds possible. *scratches head*

I think I'll wait until I get the DVD and compare. :)

Followed you over from heave_ho, because I <3 your icon so much ...

I'm not a Norrington/Jack shipper (I'm not an ANYone/Jack shipper, for that matter), but I would have found it intriguing if the compass had been pointing to Jack in that scene, because it could have meant so many things on so many levels. So, that's fine ...

But you never SEE the compass face, so there's no way of telling WHERE it's pointing. At least, _I've_ never been able to see it. I suppose I ought to try freezing the DVD, but I really don't think that it's there ...

But I was beginning to wonder if I was MISSing something, so I'm glad you posted this. It's not just me!! ;-D

Thankee! *glee*
If you want it, you can take it, of course. :D

Well, I'm a total Sparrington shipper, but I don't like when everyone takes a rumor for a fact although it (more or less) clearly isn't. So I wanted to know if there is truth to it...
It seems not. ;)

It's not just me!!
I thought the same thing! Nope, it's not just us. Phew! ;)
