I saw "Watchmen" last night. It was pure awesome!
The movie is freaking LONG, but it didn't seem to drag at all at any point throughout. And it wasn't just another superhero movie. I haven't read the books (and now I feel like I really need to, even if it means getting over my comic-illiteracy), but it still all made perfect sense (after a little confusion in the beginning.
Basically, what made the movie so amazing were the characters (well, and the soundtrack). Every single character (Dan, Laurie, Rorschach, Eddie, and even Adrien and Dr. Manhattan) was so human, and so well developed!
Dan (Nite Owl) was pretty much the stereo-typical costumed hero.... "regular Joe" sans-costume, and then masked vigilante as a night job. I went with three friends, and they all liked him the best.
Rorschach, though, was my favorite (and not only because of the terrifying mask!). That actor deserves an Oscar! He was great masked-up, but when the mask was off (in jail, or at *sob* the end) he was phenomenal! I actually cried when he died!
Dr. Manhattan was really interesting, I thought... at the beginning, I thought he'd just been created or something... I couldn't tell that he'd been human at one point at all! I thought the actor playing him did a wonderful job playing emotion down so much while still showing it.
Eddie the Comedian... hell, it's Papa Winchester, how could I not like him? And he's actually kinda like Papa Winchester... a hero, but with a dark side. I thought he played hero-but-evil very, very well. It must have been hard to shoot the fight scene in the robe, though... wouldn't it just fly up? Heh. (Also, Eddie with the flamethrower as really hot).
Laurie... I didn't find her as interesting as the others. Her relationships with her mom could have been interesting if it had played more of a part. But that wasn't as important to the story, I guess, and there were so many main characters anyway...
Adrien... he is a very pretty man. Never trust pretty men. He also had a strange accent which I couldn't quite put my finger on... I think he made a great villain because he was sort of the hero. He did save the world, after all. I'm not sure Rorschach could have done it in any other way, and I think he knew that. The cat-thing was also kind of cool, though I feel like it should have come up earlier in the movie.
The only thing that bugged me is... aren't they all (minus Dr. Manhattan) supposed to be just regular humans, without superpowers? because when they were fighting, they all seemed to have super-strength, at least. I wish those had seemed more human.
Ignoring that, the fight scenes themselves were awesome! I liked that though they were gory and shocking, they were made to look fake and comic-y, which made it a little less vomitrocious. But this movie still scared the hell out of me... I can still see the dog with the hole in its head *shivers*.
The soundtrack, by the way, ROCKS! My friend and I spent the entire movie turning to each other and whispering "I LOVE THIS SONG!".
Just a warning, though... as far as ratings go, this one is definitely an R, and a very serious R. So if you hate on-screen (mostly) partial nudity and sex scenes, and VERY gory violence, then this may not be the best movie. (There was a couple next to me who had a 12 (or so) year old with them... SUCH a bad idea!).
