Cleaned a lotta plates in Memphis

I'm in Alice's apartment here in Memphis; the boys are finally napping (as is Alice; she had to work this morning), and as I write this I'm sitting in her dining room, which is furnished with two guitars, a keyboard, a mountain bike, and... no dining room table or chairs. Ah, single apartment life. How the memories come flooding back. :) ( Read more... )

Teeth, and the losing thereof, creep me out. If I knew that I was going to live a thousand years, I would floss twice a day.

Your kids are cute, btw. Don't know that I've ever shared that thought ... but whenever you share pictures I think "what cute kids!"

what designates ma-po tofu from regular tofu, and how is it prepared? I like tofu, but I only know of one way to prepare it: stir-frying.

And btw 2 guitars, a keyboard, mountain bike (and you forgot to mention the record player and vintage record collection) instead of a dining table and chairs? That sounds perfectly reasonable to me :).

ma-po tofu is a down-home kind of Chinese main dish, the kind you're much more likely to eat at home than find in a restaurant (although I have found it on occasion - and have never liked it nearly as well as mama's own). ma-po means "old woman," and I think it actually has connotations of "pimply old woman." This particular dish has its own creation myth, which goes something like this: once upon a time in China, there were these two pimply old women who had never married (cf. pimpliness). In order to survive, they set up a little food stand by the side of a road in a mountain pass, and served this dish to hungry travelers. It was such a hit that its fame spread far and wide, and so we're eating it today, blah blah ( ... )

I love laughing at your post Dave. You have this great, dry sense of humor. See? You can find humor in another's pain. Just like me. : ) I'm really glad Alice got to see you and the boys. What a wonderful time of bonding with your boys and I'm sure Monica has had a fun time with Jen. Happy Thanksgiving. Now back to reality. Hmm.
