The Faces That I Knew

Dec 18, 2012 07:19

This is the first day I've been able to watch the news since Friday. I want to hold my kid, but she's across the country, so I have to wait until she gets home this week. I'm not much of a poet, but sometimes things bubble up and need to be said so I write them. I just very rarely share them. I feel the need to share this one. I'm putting it behind ( Read more... )

Hugs. Nicely done.

I haven't commented on this event because I just don't know what to say.

(Although I did manage to get into a 'discussion' on guns on failbook and had my comments pretty much endorsed by the guest on breakfast TV the next morning, which was... interesting.)

Oh, and you are not a crazy lady!

Thanks. And yeah, there are no words to express the enormity of this tragedy. It can't be allowed to happen again. It shouldn't have happened this time. If this means repealing the second amendment and confiscating every single gun in the nation and dropping them into Mt. Kilauea then so be it. I hope we can find a less draconian solution but this must stop.

I asked on twitter how many would have died had he had a knife instead of guns. Just so happened a man in China proved my point that same day. He attacked 22 school children in their classroom with a knife - none died.

I think there could be ways and means to subtly limit gun access that might just make it past the gun lobby.

However I do like the idea of not publicising the shooter - as in the NCIS ep with the guy who said "at least he'd be famous for what he'd done".
This was an act of terrorism, so don't publicise his name. Also, get the media to report it as a cowardly act, emphasize that the wimp needed beefy assault weapons against these tiny children and that the teachers were the heros while he was as many derogatory and scornful things as the media can come up with.

Won't make the slightest difference to this guy, but maybe the next one will realise that it's no longer a quick way to immortality in the record books as his name will never be publicised.

Oh, and thanks! :-) I usually feel like a crazy lady with the faces I end up making to get the child to smile or laugh, but that smile and that laugh make it worth while. :-)
