Fear, I think, is the answer. We humans (generally speaking) have this overwhelming need to believe that there is Something greater, Somewhere better to which we go when we shed this mortal coil. The alternative- that we are just animate flesh living out a life that touches nothing beyond our own personal divinity, that there is no greater purpose to what happens to us and ours, that there is no reward for the sufferings of life- is simply something we can't accept. To accept such a thing is to acknowledge that the buck stops with us, that we are truly responsible and accountable to and for ourselves.
Responsibility and accountability are scary things.
We rail against challenges to our spiritual/religious views because of fear. The what if? What if I'm wrong and they're right? What if I'm doing this little thing wrong in. /my/ life and screwing up my afterlife? What does that mean for me and mine and my faith?
What if I have wasted my life in pursuit of something that is not real?
