Another hurricane threatens the gulf coast, this time with Houston and Galveston as it's targets. My uncle evacuated his and my aunt's condo located on Galveston Bay yesterday (with cat in tow, of course). The cancer center that my sister is supposed to go to for treatment, located in Houston refuses to take any patients because of the hurricane. ( Read more... )

Gas prices may rise that high temporarily, but I don't believe they'll stay that way. It's an artificial high that the market can't support at this time. Plus, I'm sure that Bush will step in like with Katrina and include us in the disaster relief, which will also help bring the prices back down.

The question is, how high WILL the prices go, and how long will they stay that way? As you suggested, a run on gas will drive the prices even higher, so my advice is to make it for as long as possible on what you have by conserving and carpooling, and don't contribute to the run. Buckle down, and hope the effects wear off quickly.

On another note, I hope the effects of Rita are minimal, and that your sister can begin her treatment as soon as possible.

I agree :) Most of it is probably panic but even if prices do rise, we all know they won't stay high. "They" know that there are alternatives, and if gas priced do go unreasonably high people will start looking into them quite seriously!

I can't ever remember so many hurricanes, and such devestation. I hope it doesn't hit Texas with the severity Katrina hit. Hopefully your sister will be able to begin her treatment soon. The thing we all have to remember about the gas prices is: they are training us. They jack up the price to these absurd amounts, then lower it slightly, and *presto* we're happy to pay what now seems low by comparison. Sad to admit, I was excited to fill up the other day at $2.37.....

I know...it's unbelievable. And what is it about LA? It looks like they're going to get pounded AGAIN... New Orleans isn't directly in the path, but the rains have already caused the Levees(sp?) to break again and flood the city.

Yeah, but incomes are really low here, too. Maybe we're not so lucky.
