i think it's brilliant, because they've managed to make a product that people will buy iterations of every single time. they released an upgrade to the mini (6gb) not too long ago and phased it out post haste when they revealed the nano - the whole thing took place in less than 6 months.
i totally respect the ipod, but gah, i can't stand itunes. that being said, i think it's good in that it allowed people to start collections of digital music quickly and easily - pulling cover art, track names, the works. since i've been doing my own strictly-formatted library for years, i don't need itunes to tell me how to run my own library, thank you very much.
It's a link to this new software that's been getting some buzz lately called "Songbird". As early as now, people are saying that ITunes finally has competition, and this is it. Although it's in its very early stages.
From the site: "Songbird is a Web player built from Firefox's browser engine. Songbird is open source, will run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and supports user contributed, cross-platform extensions."
For your consideration =p And yes, Creative rocks. hehe.

right off the bat i can smell a cease and desist letter from apple - that thing looks uncannilly like itunes in every way! it even has a mini-mode! @_@
but legalities aside, i honestly think that there's little chance of introducing a new software player into the market today, simply because people have already settled into the player they like and are comfortable with (like winamp for me, and itunes for everyone else). they're not going to install yet another program that they have to learn and tweak just right just to be able to do the things they've been doing for years. add that to the fact that it's in direct competition with itunes and people will still stick to the source.
it's an admirable effort, though, and i wish them luck - let's just see how it plays out once they go into beta and gold.

They've done it tons of times before, killing their own product with a new, enhanced release... and everytime it sells like pancakes.
I never had much liking for the IPod. I'm content with my Creative =p
