I moved to Portland one year ago today

I'm not sure how much I have changed Portland by being here, but it has certainly changed me. Dramatically! Besides the 50+ pounds that I have lost I am also much more busy that I can remember being before in my life. The only workweek evening I had off last week was Friday, but then I went to a two hour event Friday morning before work, an hour ( Read more... )

That's awesome, Daniel. It's funny, I've also simply happened upon figuring out that I want to do bicycle stuff in my career. Last year I started turning my bike commuter politics into some volunteerism, and since, one thing has led to another, and another, and now I'm completely invested. Can't really escape it. Whether I'll be doing it on the side for free, or doing it all the time for money, I think I'm also lined up for a very bicycle-centric life.

I think the reason it sucks so many people in is that it isn't just about bikes. Bikes are an indicator species. So many things about urban planning have to be right for bikes to thrive. When bikes thrive so many other things happen. They save resources. They make us travel through our neighborhoods instead of around them on freeways, and in a way that people can call out to us to get our attention. We are less materialistic, as anything big enough to require getting out a bike trailer makes us think twice about if it is really worth it. I could probably spend a few days working on a list. I never would have thought it would be such a big deal until I got involved.

Have you been to blosoming lotus for lunch? It's a madhouse! Backspace was largely selected for lazyness reasons. I'm not against trying other places.
