You're right; it just looks awkward, not just the logo itself but the placement. It strikes me that someone just stuck a sticker of the logo in the wrong place and couldn't get it off.
I think it would have looked much better if they had left the original logo the way it was, placed it differently, and maybe put all that writing about the zero carbs/sugar/etc around the top of the can. It would have kept it much cleaner.
As my creative message construction professor would say, "What, did you fall on it on your way to class? Is that why it looks like crap?"
I agree. The new logos look like a hundred other generic corporate circle-and-swoosh icons, and the Pepsi variant especially could be stuck on any charter-jet airline.
I think if you take the logo away from can and brand name and just look at it on its own... it doesn't look like anything. If I squint and tilt, I guess I can see the 'smile, grin, laugh' thing, but only because I was told that. It just doesn't represent anything. Maybe a wave at sunset? In that way, it's kind of Japanese. Hell, for a million bucks, I'd have given them a fourth color!
