Everyone knows people like Rodenberry and Clark have pushed technology more than the developers themselves by conceptualizing technology's continual role in the future. This is the biggest misconception about piracy, and the best point against their phony numbers -- assuming that because a movie or song is pirated means it was worth paying for. If I had to make the choice between deleting all my pirated mp3's or paying .99 for them, over 90% of them would be deleted.
You should read Daniel Dennett with respect to science and Richard Rorty as far as Trekkie social and political hopes go. Both authors/philosophers create bibles for the Star Trek enthusiast, whether they know it or not.
