♛ CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: the medicine seller (no name, really - people just call him medicine seller)
Series: Mononoke
Ability: Most notably, the banishment of 'demons' by using another self. It's unclear if this 'other self' is his true form, and no one has ever talked to him anyway. His other form wields an enormous sword of flame that seems to extend and contract at will, and he is also capable of surprising agility and strength. He hardly ever shows up, only in very specific circumstances - when a demon has been created through human vices. The medicine seller (in his usual body) can also set up wards and barriers, using his own paper talismans. He's also physically surprisingly fit and well-balanced (it's hard balancing on five-inch geta, okay?).
Position: teaches Wards (creating barriers, use in everyday life, and combat) and guidance counselor, though he's more of a listener than a counselor...
Canon Resource Link: There isn't much on his actual character, but
here is the Wikipedia page for the anime.
Known simply as 'the medicine seller,' this strange man wanders Japan, passing himself off as an average vendor for medical treatments. However, he is often found in areas where strange things are happening. This is when he sets about searching for the form, truth, and regret - the form of the mononoke, the truth behind how it came to be, and the reason why it even appeared. With these three requirements, he can draw the Sword of Exorcism and slay the mononoke. Then he disappears without a trace, a simple medicine seller on the roads of Japan... both in the past and in the present.
History: The origins of his travels are a mystery. His destination is uncertain. The only thing definite about the medicine seller is his present, and even that is strange and unusual. A constant presence on the Floating Island for an indeterminate amount of time, the medicine seller has a past of being unorthodox in the slaying of demons and on almost any front, really.
An example of his strange abilities takes place on a large ship, traveling between El and Cross. Everything is going fine, with a range of strange passengers - a pompous young writer, a young seamstress looking for work, a strange looking swordsman, a monk and his retainer, the greedy captain and his assistant, and last but not least, the medicine seller. During the night, however, the ship goes off course, venturing into an area of the sea known for strange occurrences. A demon appears onboard, asking them to reveal their greatest fears.
One by one, they admit their own failings. Eventually the demon questions the monk, who does not speak, but inadvertently reveals that the one who sent the ship off course was him. He wanted to bring the ship into this apparently demon-infested area of ocean, just to find the 'spirit' of his sister. His sister had, many years before, taken his place in a sacrificial ship out to sea - a one way trip meant to appease the ocean. Shouldn't he have felt guilty? That was the problem the monk had been faced with, and the reason why the medicine seller was now facing a demon that had grown over fifty years.
With the form - a sea demon looking for vengeance - the truth - it was the monk's sister who had died in his place - and the regret - he was supposed to feel guilty, but he had been so happy to survive - the medicine seller drew the Sword of Exorcism and killed the demon.
Sacrifices to the sea are not at all common these days, of course, which brings to mind this... exactly how long has the medicine seller been around? No one knows, and he's not going to tell. Because he's just a 'medicine seller.'
Personality:
Despite his job (or jobs - as medicine seller, demon banisher, counselor, teacher, etc.), the medicine seller is not exactly the best person to entrust your life to. Oh, on the outside, of course, he's amiable enough. Or that might be the face paint. If you talk to him a little more, though, you'll find that you're dealing with someone who talks like a circle and gives up about as much information as a rock.
Outwardly gentle and fairly friendly, the medicine seller seems to tolerate most people's company - whether it be for a smoke, a quick drink, or even a ship voyage. He'll talk, though it might be less than most people are used to, choosing his words carefully and speaking very, very, slowly. He listens carefully, though it may not seem like it, to everything.
When it comes down to demons, however, the medicine seller can be extraordinarily unconcerned about other people's safety. During the ship incident, he knew that they were sailing towards a dangerous area and did absolutely nothing to stop it. He didn't even mention it in passing to the other passengers - he just sat back, smoked, and watched. People have accused him of enjoying the danger, of being amused by their fear and just looking for demons to face off with. He doesn't say a word, though - just smiles, and says something vague and possibly meaningful. But you never know with the medicine seller.
He will, on occasion, give advice or actually teach something, but it's always a little messy with him. He might be more distracted by the weather or by anything, really. When it comes down to really giving information, he's hard to pin down. He seems to be almost lazy in his actions and only does work when he really has to.
His facial expression barely changes. With strange purple coloring on his upper lip (paint? lipstick? birthmark?) making him look amused at any given time, the medicine seller watches the surrounding going-ons with detachment and rarely useful comments. During serious situations, however, the medicine seller becomes persuasive and actually of use to others. Overall, the medicine seller is a quirky individual who seems to be very, very out of it and has little regard for other people's opinions - but maybe a little for their safety.
Though one of his... 'clients' has asked him this: "Just who are you saving? Us, or the demons?"
♜ SAMPLES
Third Person Sample:
The door was open. Wide open. And yet no one seemed to even consider entering his room. Which was fine by him, really. Though it really was a pleasant place - clean and seemingly wide open, with spare but comfortable furniture and open windows.
He exhaled purple smoke and tilted his head slowly to one side, ash-blond hair falling off of his shoulder. It was very quiet this afternoon. The medicine seller wondered half-heartedly if there were demons preventing entry. It wouldn't be the first time. On the train, before - there had been that disconnected carts cut off from the rest of the train - and the world. It had been... amusing, really.
A sigh, and sweet smelling smoke wafted out of his mouth and slowly dissipated into the air. Really, why wasn't anyone here? Wasn't it time for the first period? He should check his notebook. Ah, but it was on the other side of his table. Too far. And besides, if anyone was late, it was his students. The medicine seller frowned - just a little. He felt like he was forgetting something. Not that it mattered - he would remember eventually. He always remembered. Eventually.
The weather was quite nice today, he noted. There weren't many people outside, though. He really should check his schedule. There was something different today. Twirling his pipe around in his fingers, the medicine seller straightened in his chair and stayed sitting up for a moment or two. Yes, he should really check his schedule. The medicine seller finally took his geta-clad feet off the desk and flipped open his notebook to take a look at the schedule. After a moment, he sat back in his seat and closed his eyes.
Ah. Today was Saturday.
Well, at least he knew why no one was coming in. No wonder no one had even passed through the hallway (it was filled with a curious smell that came from the pipe he was smoking, and would have deterred most visitors anyway). Not that it bothered him - it was nice being all alone in his classroom.
The medicine seller breathed in and out, leaving fading smoke in the air and no shadow of worry in his mind.
First Person Sample:
[A curiously dressed individual is visible in the feed, apparently not paying any attention. He has his back to the camera and there's smoke rising from something in front of him. Before you can worry about his shirt being on fire, though, he turns around and smiles with a pipe in his hand.]
[With a second look, though, he's not actually smiling. It's a curious design of purple coloring (perhaps face paint) that gives the illusion of a permanent smile. When he speaks, it's in a voice that has very little emotional inflection.]
If anyone is taking the Wards class, I will be the teacher for that class. I will also be acting as guidance counselor.
[He pauses, inspects the wall next to him.]
That is all.
