title: useless
fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
characters/pairing: Swiss/Japan
warnings: Lots of stuff implied. >>
quote: In the end, its just the talking that's useless.
notes: written for miyako_tsuki . It came out rather drabbley.

Neither of them likes to talk.

Correction - Kiku doesn’t like to talk, and Vash prefers to threaten. It’s only in the company of specific people that they talk in a normal sense. For Kiku it is his closest friends, and for Vash it is his sister. When they see each other, they nod and say nothing, because words are (unnecessary) useless.

Kiku doesn’t believe half of what he says and Vash doesn’t do half of what he threatens, and so they have come to think of words as (lies?) useless. The words that come from their own mouths are soft and cold all at once (soft from him and cold from the other).

Communicating verbally has always hard (his expressions are no help and he places too much faith in his guns), but between the two of them, words are (especially) nearly useless.

He knows the value of movement - he bows, nods his interest, raises a hand in disagreement (quickly and harshly). And he knows the meaning behind touch - he brushes back a girl’s hair (one girl), strokes with a brush on rice paper, presses cold metal against someone’s feverishly afraid skin. The words he writes are (to him and him) useless.

He doesn’t like blood but the things that cause blood to spill are different altogether. The cold (metal) blade he carries is evidence enough and the way he stares as Vash touches his weapons is just extra. Maybe it’s Vash, maybe it’s the weapon. It really doesn’t matter.

It’s touching (and not speaking) and that is what he prefers.

The next time they touch, he wonders why Vash isn’t as cold as the metal he touches so much (‘it should carry over, shouldn’t it?’). Then he just turns his face to the sky and knows that below the haze of gunsmoke there is something not useless (something that is not words, something that cannot ever be put into words).

Each time Kiku moves in writing, Vash stares silently at the characters and doesn’t understand them.

Neither does Kiku.

(words are useless)

And after he’s done writing, Vash looks away from the drying calligraphy (black on white and oh so useless) and at him. The only words that mean anything (‘you smell like ink’ and so much more) are spoken mouth-on-skin and through movement and touch.

(in the end, its just the talking that’s useless)

Words can mean something, after all, when they come from someone else.
