I didn't grow up on the Mars books to the same extent that Judith did. But they're classic pulp, and at least this production doesn't seem to suffer from... a limited realization of the scope, let's say.
I guess I'm really curious to see it. I kind of WANT it to be good, or at least fun. I'm not sure from this if it will be. I look at it, and part of me thinks... are they trying to show the Star Wars prequels how it should be done, or are they trying to BE the Star Wars prequels? A small distinction but an important one.
I do have to say that I can't fault their cunning deployment of Zeppelin's "Kashmir". Well played. (Not just because it's a fantastically epic piece of music, but because of the way the actual song, in feeling and lyrics, could be said to mesh well with the story/setting.)
I almost think the proper venue for a John Carter of Mars thing would be HBO, or...honestly, Starz or Showtime. I.e., HBO but a little trashier. Then you'd get the nudity and the lurid pulpy flavor a little more intact.

Have you seen the poster for this? I'm not completely sold on the way it handles the title character, but overall, I like the design.
