No, mice are totally not smarter than that. Not even domesticated mice which should _know_ about things like water bowls by now. We had mice when I was a kid and I think I fished about three of them out of their tiny bowls before we gave up and got my brother a dog instead.
I like the traditional traps. The "humane" traps simply mean that they will come back, unless you take them somewhere else. Then you've taken then on vacation. I don't like the glue traps - *that* seems a bit cruel. I like the snap-traps. Quick and decisive in most cases. We got these black box-like D-Con traps from the supermarket; the're reusable. The lever that sets the trap is outside the box, the snap-bar is inside, so just pull on the lever again to lift the bar, shake out the finished product, and reset. With two of these, I think we've caught well over a dozen.
If they would be kind enough to get caught by the humane traps, I would take them in a jar with holes in the lid to work to a coworker who wants them. I think that's far enough away, don't you?
