So Supernatural... we have to talk.
The preview that aired last week worried me. I mean, an evil whore house? How can that possibly end in any way that doesn't have me a) crying tears of frustration or b) turning off the television in disgust?
And in the first... half of the show I was totally watching on the edge of my seat, exasperated. Opening: man beating his wife to death because she scheduled something (ie performed within the domestic sphere)- awesome!. Then it turns out that it's a stripper! No wait, a siren, which is female in mythology, intoxicating men and forcing them to commit an act of violence against the woman closest to them. And not even like evil, deserving (?) women, just women in general.
At this point, Supernatural, you fail. The mythological female figure, the siren, is a pretty awful representation of women given that they tempt men to their deaths. But now, you've got them manipulating men to kill other women... so it's not even like we can rationalize it by saying the men deserve it for being wicked horny and out of control.
BUT THEN, OH SHOW!
You degendered the siren and I love you for it. Cara, not the siren! You tricked us! You relied on our assumption that you would make the overtly sexualized woman the monster. BUT NO! The Man, the Man who knows all about cars and rock music and carries a gun, is the siren. He squirts shit into Sammy's mouth, which was so gross to watch, but totally masculine! Jizz, folks. The siren jizzed in Sam's mouth and Sam fell in love with him! Additionally (and less gross), the siren explained itself in its masculine form, which made the whole "I just want to be loved!" just batshit crazy, as oppose to feminine crazy.
I imagine someone could read some issues with homosexuality, but I really think that by having the siren as both a man and a woman saves it from becoming anything like that. So show, you rock. And I haven't even touched on the awesomeness that is Sam and Dean loving each other the most (even if they are obviously going to fuck each other up before long).
Also, I'm going to ignore the drunk and awkwardly sexual woman!scientist, even though she 1)makes no sense and 2)is one of the few women with power, and you made her an alcoholic. I'm going to chalk up Sam's weirdly timed attraction to plot and his slow descent into EVIL, and the need to subvert shit. Which you did, you totally did.
