Snakes going inside the walls of houses isn't common, but finding them in the backyard here isn't exactly a novel experience either...

If you tell someone around here you saw a snake in the backyard the won't believe you... if you tell them you have one in your walls, they will tell you to get you medication fixed... XD
We just have one species anyway and I can remember seeing... huh... like three (?) in the last 34 years...
But I didn't see snakes when I was in Australia either, so maybe something is wrong with me?

(Here in Midwestern America, snakes are a rather rare occurrence. And also, it's about 10 degrees Fahrenheit right now, which translates to FREAKING COLD degrees Celsius, if I'm not mistaken. Snakes wouldn't stand a chance. Yay~)
Isn't there someone like Billy the Exterminator around where you are? I imagine that'd be great for business.

Actually, a lot of people don't kill snakes. Normally we get people to relocate them when we can.

LOL, Billy the Exterminator is more like a trapper. He prefers to release wildlife, too. I'm totally in favor of not killing the buggers, just get 'em far away from me!
