Working in Retail is not supposed to be an end; rather, it is intended to be a means for the continuance of pursuing other interests that can become more permanent. Even if one is successful in retail, what can one say in the end...after 30 years of working therein? Would you have sincerely fulfilled your goals? I think not. So, instead of letting yourself become discouraged, take heart in the fact that you're moving towards a predetermined goal. Whether or not you have nailed down that goal is entirely in your mind.

Set a goal and achieve it.

I second what broken chalice said. There's certainly nothing wrong with retail. (In my opinion it's practically a right of passage to work in retail for a little while at some point.) But I know you can do better. Unfortunately the job market's still down so it won't be easy, but there must be something out there that's within your realm of professional interests.

What kind of grad program are you applying for? More psychology, or exploring other areas?
