When I first started this journal, I was determined that I wouldn't have private posts unless I really needed them. I've pretty much always lived my life with the policy of it being an open book; I always try to act in such a fashion that I won't be ashamed of my actions, and won't want to conceal them from anyone ( Read more... )

http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=120 helped me. My history is locked down now and I feel a lot better approaching the job market, etc.

Yeah, but it's no help if you don't have a paid account. :/

it took me a long time to realize that there can be a difference between being ashamed of something, and of having some boundaries about who knows what about you. just like (hopefully) you wouldn't walk naked into a crowded place, or even let close friends see you in such a manner. I happily use my locks as layers of clothing :)

I hope you're doing well! I knew you very, very briefly at SLU in my last year there.

Hmm. I'm curious as to who you are, because I can't figure it out from the (admittedly sparse) information on your LJ.

I guess I just like to think that if you live a life in which you treat other people well and respectfully, you shouldn't need to restrict information about yourself. Unfortunately, it doesn't work, for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that there are unscrupulous people who'll use that information to take advantage of you.

Really, though, another reason that bothers me every bit as much is that other people will judge you negatively based on some very selective bit of information they hear. I *hate* people judging me -- especially when it's over something I see nothing wrong with, but they've taken some moral exception to, and over which they decide to make my life difficult. It hasn't happened to me many times, but it's happened enough for me to have developed a strong aversion to it.
