I guess I just like to think that if you live a life in which you treat other people well and respectfully, you shouldn't need to restrict information about yourself. Unfortunately, it doesn't work, for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that there are unscrupulous people who'll use that information to take advantage of you.
Really, though, another reason that bothers me every bit as much is that other people will judge you negatively based on some very selective bit of information they hear. I *hate* people judging me -- especially when it's over something I see nothing wrong with, but they've taken some moral exception to, and over which they decide to make my life difficult. It hasn't happened to me many times, but it's happened enough for me to have developed a strong aversion to it.
