Working late at the office, Cole heard and felt Phoebe's cry of pain and fear through the bond of their souls. Immediately he shimmered home and to their bedroom, where he found Phoebe lying on the floor. "Phoebe?" he called, scooping her up into his arms and setting her on the bed.
When Phoebe heard Cole's voice, she opened her eyes. For a moment, she lay on the bed, trying to remember what had happened. Her eyes filled with fear as she sat up and looked down to her stomach, pressing her hand there. There was nothing.
She shook her head slowly and then wrapped her arms tightly around Cole, burying her face in his chest.
"A nightmare," she whispered. "It was just another damned nightmare attack." She swallowed back her panic. "He stabbed me this time..."
Phoebe nodded against him. "The protections around the bed don't always work. I did talk to Tara like you wanted me to... and I talked to Anita as well." She shuddered. "They were much worse when we were apart."
